Culture, Entertainment and Tourism in Future Scenarios of Croatia

Sep 11, 2024 | Center, News

On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the founding of Croatia osiguranje, the pavilion Croatia 2074: A look into the future was officially opened today in front of the Mimara Museum in Zagreb. The goal of the project is to present the futuristic views of some thirty leading Croatian scientists, experts, and artists who analyzed facts and trends through in-depth discussions and created different scenarios for the Croatian future. Credit for the production of the project goes to Millenium promocija and Bruketa, Žinić and Grey. The scenarios are presented through short video clips in three versions – pessimistic, realistic and optimistic. The topics of the future presented are: International Relations, Demographic Future, Future Ecosystem, Economic Development, and Culture and Entertainment in the Future. IRMO researcher Daniela Angelina Jelinčić prepared or contributed for the topics Culture and Entertainment in the Future and Tourism, the latter of which was presented under the topic Economic Development. She also participated in the press conference, presenting the project prior to its official opening.

Sneak peek into the scenarios: In 2074, the boundaries between culture and entertainment are blurred; artificial intelligence plays a significant role in the production of cultural content because it is cheaper, but it still cannot replace human creativity; consumption of cultural content is digital, but we still rely on experiential art because we are social beings who seek interaction; the English language is increasingly replacing Croatian expressions; magazines and books survive only as niche markets; music is consumed in interaction with other artistic creations (fine art, design, film, etc.) in order to create an emotional experience; we will go to museums on a doctor’s prescription, as culture provides psychological well-being… Tourism continues to be important for the Croatian economy, but tourism consumption is changing due to climate change: due to rising temperatures and rising sea levels, coastal cities are disappearing and tourism is moving inland which is more attractive for its pleasant climate; while tourism on the coast disappears in the summer months, it flourishes inland. The heat increases the risk of fires and affects health, so tourist spending is performed in the continental destinations. Alongside this, gastronomic offer is also changing: the products consumed in tourism are still local, but no longer autochthonous – in 2074, figs, olives, and lavender are grown in Gorski kotar…

Whatever happens, the future is not given; we shape it together and influence it…
