CSDC- Center for Sustainable Development through Culture

CORK – Centar za održivi razvoj kroz kulturu

CSDC- The Center for Sustainable Development through Culture (CORK – Centar za održivi razvoj kroz kulturu) promotes innovative holistic approaches in studying culture with the aim of sustainable development. In this case, culture is examined through its intrinsic (what culture is per se) and instrumental value (its role in the development of other areas). The research focuses on topics such as cultural tourism, creative industries, cultural heritage, innovations in culture and social innovations, experience economy and behavioral economics in the field of culture. Through the above mentioned, the factors that influence experience creation and psychological well-being are examined. Also, topics of international cooperation and international relations in culture are in the Center’s scope of interest, both in the European and global context. Initial hypothesis is that a culture is essential component of societal development. It has a significant role manifested in the development of urban and rural areas, increasing economic prosperity and equality, improving health, preserving the environment, improving education systems, advancing urban planning, developing sustainable tourism, enhancing quality of life, improving international cooperation and relations, etc. Innovative approaches to culture research can change the misconception of culture as a futile expense and use its potential in overall development. Also, all of the above is in line with the current strategic priorities of Croatia. In addition to the mentioned themes that are in continuous research, the Center’s work reaches topics such as the psychology of creativity, art therapy and psychological well-being, food culture, “green culture”, etc. The aim is to enrich cultural opportunities, achieve sustainable development, and efficient public policies.

The primary goal of the Center’s research is to demonstrate the importance of culture for social development and psychological well-being, both for individuals and society in general. All in order to tackle social problems and to recognize the role of a culture in public policies and sustainable development. This implies the development and testing of new concepts to ensure the sustainability of culture i.e. new development models in culture.

In addition to cooperation within the Department for Resource Economics, Environmental Protection and Regional Development (e.g. green heritage, social entrepreneurship, regional development, tourism etc.), the Center acts as an “anchor” that connects (through common topics) the Department for Culture and Communication (e.g., cultural policies, culture and education, participation in culture governance); the Department for European Integration (e.g., social entrepreneurship and social innovations, preparation and implementation of EU projects/tenders); the Department for International Economic and Political Affairs (e.g., international relations in culture). Also, cooperation with other IRMO Centers is assumed (e.g., culture and migrations, creative industries etc.).
